While the environmental pictogram was not mandated by OSHA, it is listed because it may be required by other agencies for labeling. The pictogram symbols are commonly broken down into three hazard classes: Chemical/Physical Risk, Health Risk and Environmental Risk. Chemical / Physical Risk Health Risk Environmental Risk Corrosive (Corrosion Pictogram) Identifies chemicals with the following hazards: O O Skin corrosion/burns O O Eye damage O O Corrosive metals Oxidizing (Flame Over Letter "O" Pictogram) Identifies chemicals with the following hazards: O O Oxidizers Gas Cylinder (Cylinder Pictogram) Identifies chemicals with the following hazards: O O Gasses under pressure Acute Toxic (Exclamation Mark Pictogram) Identifies chemicals with the following hazards: O O Irritant (skin & eye) O O Skin sensitizer O O Acute toxicity (harmful)* O O Narcotic effects O O Respiratory tract infection O O Hazardous ozone layer (non mandatory) * GHS severe toxicity symbol is used for fatal and severe toxicity. Environmental (not mandated in U.S.) (Environment Pictogram) Identifies chemicals with the following hazards: O O Aquatic toxicity Health Hazard (Health Hazard Pictogram) Identifies chemicals with the following hazards: O O Carcinogen O O Mutagenicity O O Reproductive toxicity O O Respiratory sensitizer O O Target organ toxicity O O Aspiration toxicity Severe Toxic (Skull & Cross Bones Pictogram) Identifies chemicals with the following hazards: O O Acute toxicity (fatal or toxic)* * GHS Acute Toxic symbol is used for less severe toxicity. Flame (Flame Pictogram) Identifies chemicals with the following hazards: O O Flammables O O Pyrophorics O O Self-heating O O Emits flammable gas O O Self-reactives O O Organic peroxides Explosive (Exploding Bomb Pictogram) Identifies chemicals with the following hazards: O O Explosives O O Self-reactives O O Organic peroxides
