39 General Lab Labels Improve Your Efficiency with the Lean Lab Strategy Lean is a set of techniques used to manage a work environment by eliminating waste, organizing the workplace, streamlining procedures and establishing clear, visual standards. In the laboratory, lean initiatives focus on improving safety, eliminating wasted motion, space and supplies, reducing errors, and automating the specimen handling process. Implement a Lean Lab in four steps: Work Cell Specimen Processing By arranging your work environment into work cells, you can minimize movement, reduce batch sizes, decrease set-up time, improve lab safety, and standardize work processes with visual cues. Remove the Waste Focus on eliminating any activity that does not add value to a process. The seven types of waste are: transportation, inventory, motion, waiting, over production, over processing and defective product. 5S Organization - Sort: Sort items in a given location, removing any unnecessary items. - Set in Order: Determine the best location for remaining items and set inventory limits. - Shine: Clean your entire laboratory to eliminate the sources of contamination. - Standardize: Use visual controls to provide instructions on how to maintain order. - Sustain: Regularly communicate and train employees to maintain the lab's 5S standards. Value Stream Mapping Create a map or a flowchart that outlines the current state of one of your lab's processes, including the task, duration and deliverable of each stage. Then create a "future state map" that illustrates your ideal process. Begin to implement the improvements by slowly modifying your facility's layout, workspaces and processes as defined in the future state map.
